In “ALAKAZAM!,” I’m a famous magician, with my boyfriend as my assistant. We open our show the same way every night, by appearing in a puff of blue smoke to “Main Title” by Bernard Hermann. I perform my opening illusion—pulling a white rabbit from a top hat—but my applause is interrupted when I catch my assistant/boyfriend flirting with ladies in the audience. The music fades into “Somewhat Damaged” by Nine Inch Nails, and we continue our performance together—at times, a synchronized pole dance; at others, performing traditional magic tricks, aerially. And we end the way we always have, with my assistant climbing into the Blade Box illusion. Only this time, he will not come out. And this time, the blood and the screams are not an illusion.
MUSIC USED: “Main Title” by Bernard Hermann & “Somewhat Damaged” by Nine Inch Nails
APPROX. SET LENGTH: 6 minutes
ACT TITLE: ALAKAZAM!
Inspired by 1920s vaudeville and Roxy Velvet, I will debut on lyra inside an 11' birdcage dressed in all-white, and sparkling from head to heel. As a lilac satin cover is slipped off the cage bars at :17, two crisscrossing white spotlights will shine through the cage. Low-lying smoke will creep across the floor (and into the audience), stained purple by footlights. Lyra choreography will include showgirl-style lyra poses, and some birdcage dancing. At the midpoint of the song, I’ll leave the cage and perform classic floorwork and low flow pole dancing as snow “rains” from the ceiling.
MUSIC USED: "If Rain Is What You Want" by Slipknot
